HE’S THE GUY

Driver of the Day was scant reward for Guy Botterill in the second leg of the 2002 Nationals run in Natal in July. But for a seized motor in Heat One, Botterill could so easily have headed for Vereeniging with a real chance of lifting this year’s 100 cc Super title from Gauteng Tony Kart front-runner Robert Briggs or Briggs’ arch rival , Kosmic-mounted Gavin Cronje.

Botterill’s motor suffered terminal tightness just as he was making a move on Briggs for the lead on the challenging Idube Raceway. A new mill for his Castrol-sponsored Tony Kart saw Guy charge through the field in heats two and three and in the final heat he ended just behind winner Briggs to place an impressive third overall for the day.

Fourth was veteran Mike van Niekerk and fifth the young Gauteng charger Wesley Orr who also had a tangle in the opening heat.

Botterill’s points tally for the day was just 29, with Briggs scoring a perfect 60 and Cronje 45 for his three second places and a third.

Botterill will travel up to Gauteng for the regional at Vereeniging on August 24 and hopefully achieve a set up that’ll see him make a fight of it in the final round of the SA Nationals.
