Cristiano Morgado of Durban won the 2012 DD2 Master’s World Karting Championship in this weekend’s Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in the Algarve, Portugal.
Saturday’s success was the third World Championship title for Morgado, who became the first karter to score a hat-trick of championships in the 13th running of the Rotax series, the most competitive karting championships in the world.

ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS 2012 READY TO START RACING

This was the last day of Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals without action on the track. After the registration of all drivers and scrutineering of their karts, it’s now time to the teams to work hard, granting that all is set for the first laps in the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve.
THE “OLYMPICS” OF KARTING
At the end of November the 2012 Rotax champions will compete in Portugal in the 13th Rotax Max Challenge Grand Final in Portugal. And South Africa has one of the best winning records of all in this series since its inauguration in 1999.
Think of the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals as the “Olympics” of international karting. The buzz generated by hosting over 250 drivers from over 60 countries, and their attendant pit crews in a karting village over a week of intense competition has to be experienced to be appreciated.
Meritus Scouts South Africa’s Rotax Finals at Zwartkops
The International championship-winning Meritus Team Principal, Peter Thompson, confirms he will attend the South African Rotax finals on 6 and 7 October.
Meritus has entered into an agreement with South African World Champion Wesleigh Orr who will exclusively represent Meritus brand and interests in South Africa.

ROTAX MAX CHALLENGE GRAND FINALS IN PORTUGAL: BATTLE OF THE CHAMPIONS
At the 2011 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Al Ain, U.E.A. last November, Ben Cooper, from the United Kingdom, won the title in the Rotax Max class while Pier-Luc Ouellette, from Canada, won the title in the Rotax DD2 class. Cooper secured his participation at the 2012 Grand Finals by winning the Rotax Max class at the Florida Winter Tour last winter in the U.S.A. For the rest of the season, he moved to Canada and raced the whole season in the Rotax DD2 class and battled against the current DD2 champion Pier-Luc Ouellette.
