KARTING’S GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH

The enthusiasm in Ed Murray’s voice was palpable as he described the scene from the southern tip of Italy in late November.

“You have to be here to believe it. This is the best kart meeting I’ve ever been to, it’s in another league!”, his voiced crackled over his Blackberry, from 8 000 km away.

And Ed’s been around. He started racing his home-built karts in the late 1960s, was a member of the South African 100 cc squad that did battle in Europe on numerous occasions in the ‘70s, won eight national titles as a driver in the ‘80s and ‘90s and for the past decade, Ed Murray Racing has been the official importer of Austrian-built BRP Rotax engines to South Africa.

East Rand karter Caleb Williams won the 2010 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Final in Muro Leccese, Italy yesterday (November 21) to beat out 72 champion drivers from all over the world.

In an incredible feat of driving the CBC Boksburg Grade 11 student had to start from the back of the 34 kart grid in the winner-take-all final, but managed to work his way to the front, cheered on by a 5 000-strong crowd of thrilled spectators.

Caleb had a brilliant drive from 32nd on the grid. He took advantage of a few big incidents in the first few corners. Congratulations to Caleb and his team.

With two practice sessions as well as qualifying for all four divisions of Rotax MAX competition scheduled for the day, Thursday promised to be a full day of track action at the La Conca International Circuit for the 2010 Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals. With the amount of track activity scheduled for today, the morning driver’s briefings actually took place last evening so morning practice could start bright and early.

Mathew Swanepoel,15, from Durban is one of the talents who is participating in the Rotax Grand Finals 2010. This 11^th edition is being held in La Conca in Italy. Swanepoel is one of the South Africans who qualified for the “the Olympic Games in motorsport.”

SOUTH AFRICAN KARTERS TAKE ON THE WORLD

This weekend in Italy, four South African Champion karters will take on the world’s best at the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals.

Marc Murray, Caleb Williams, Mathew Swanepoel and Gary Marais will be up against 252 drivers from 55 countries – all of them champions in their national Rotax series – in this 11th running of the world’s most popular karting series. And our four champions have an enormous reputation to uphold for their country, at the La Conca circuit in Muro Leccese in the four day event run from November 19-21. Since the first running of the Rotax Max Challenge world series, no less than seven titles have been won by South Africans in the various class categories.

The past weekend’s South African Rotax Max Challenge 2010 final round at Zwartkops saw some nail-bitingly-close racing and some even tighter run-ins to the final championship points tallies.

In two days of high drama that saw some fancied competitors leave the track mid-race and lose out on vital finishing positions, the cream eventually rose to the top.

When the sun sets on Zwartkops Kart Raceway near Pretoria on Sunday, October 3 2010, a total of four new South African champion kart racers will take their places on the top of the podium.

The final round of the South African Rotax Max Challenge series is being run over two days at Zwartkops on Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3, and the slightest slip by the major contenders in the five SA championship categories will see their title hopes slip away. A fifth champion will also be crowned in the Maxterino class for young drivers, which currently carries South African Challenge status, although for 2011 the class will be a fully-fledged South African Championship.

“Well, it doesn’t feel like I’ve won this yet. Over the whole weekend we just watched Tom Fawcett seeing that he could still take the title. Friday we had a bit of a problem, then Saturday we tried a lot of things with the set-up and Sunday with new tyres it just wasn’t quick enough. In the pre-final I had a bad start when I was pushed around, but I came through from P23 to 7th. When I overtook Fawcett, I was thinking already that I was the champion. In the final I drove three laps and had some contact with another kart, so I came in because I didn’t need to race. Thanks to everybody who supported me; Tim at DFK/Gillard and all the team, my mechanic and my dad.”
