Local Heroes CAPE MAX CHALLENGE MEET DRAWS 27 ENTRIES
Mark Kavanagh won all three heats at Killarney on August 10, seeing off a strong Gauteng challenge that included Mark Cronje, Jennifer Murray and Chris Morgado.
The Gauteng karters had made the trip to Cape Town as a shake-down event for the Max Challenge National final on October 9 but Kavanagh seemed unfazed by the extra pressure, saving his best performance of the season so far to stake a serious claim for a South African team spot for next year’s finals.
The final heat was a humdinger with the top six involved in a battle that could have been covered with a king-sized duvet. Kavanagh won by a stub-axle width from Claudio Piazza-Musso, with Leo Joos third, making it a Cape clean sweep for the podium positions.
Pretoria girl racer, 19-year-old Jennifer Murray, finished fourth, and remarked with a grin afterwards that she was just 0,25 seconds behind the winner at the end. Ricky Perdigoa finished fifth after a race-long jostle with Joos and Piazza. Mark Cronje had a weekend beset by problems and didn’t show as a front-runner.
In 100 Supers Quinton Laubscher won from Mark Perel, with GP Juniors going to Aiden de Nobrega, son of well-known saloon and single seater driver Mark de Nobrega.
