UK Karting News – Ken Walker writes

It has not been a good month for Rotax Max in the British Isles. Tragically 29 year old Helen Adcock lost her life following a serious accident on the Isle of Man. The Manx Kart Grand Prix takes place on the public roads in Peel, a city in the west of the island which is dubbed the Road Racing Capital of the World. Street Racing is an awesome spectacle but we have had to reflect on the fact that it is that much more dangerous than circuit racing, and when Helen and another kart collided, there was a heavy impact which sadly claimed Helen’s life.

On mainland Britain, 6 engines were impounded by the scrutineers following a Super One meeting in Rowrah, a track in the north west of England close to the scenic Lake District region. They were in Rotax Junior and Minimax categories. Following a stripping down in controlled conditions, 4 of the 6 motors were found to have been fitted with non-original parts. The findings have been submitted to the British governing body, their MSA, and the sealing agent has been suspended forthwith pending further consideration of the issue.

However there is one good note to report. Former Formula One World Champion Nigel Mansell started in Karts but in the 210 Villiers class. However now that his sons are taking up racing they have commenced in Rotax . Nigel was known to have discouraged his lads from thinking about a motor racing career but is happy for them to have some fun racing Rotax Max. In fact the former World Champion might even be tempted back to the occasional celebrity guest drive himself. When asked if he could be seen in a kart at some point in the future ‘We’ll have to see later in the year’ was the reply.

He is clearly most impressed with Rotax Max. It’s wonderful he said. ’In my day I remember the back breaking lifting and pushing that was involved. Those days are long gone and that’s great. But all the water cooled engines have moved forward tremendously. They’re a lot more reliable and fun.’

When reminded that he would qualify for the gentleman’s challenge as well as the Dad-Son class his reply was ‘You never know. We might have a look’.
